Magazine Homework - Research for preparation.

Research – My magazine Idea

I’ve chosen to do R&B (rhythm and Beat) /Hip-hop mainly because I enjoy that genre and also because it’s popular so it is bound to have a wider range and varieties within the target audience. I feel that this particular genre covers a lot of artists than other genres e.g. rock, classical etc. This meaning that it will be a lot more popular as more people are expected to listen to it. Even the style of the genre within R&B will grab attention from other people who may not listen to it as much because they’re many types of ways to show and perform R&B music.

A lot of the time, R&B/Hip Hop music is targeted at 15-35 (on average). Mainly due to the magazines being explicit, but teenagers who read this may inspire to be like the rappers or singers they listen to due to taking on an interest in the style of their music. For the older audience, they may enjoy listening to it because hip-hop has been around for so long and R&B is just an altered Morden version of it, younger audiences like it.

I hope to make a magazine with appropriate content related to this genre. I will include the latest trend in music, the gossip and new stories on the artists and may include quizzes, fashion etc. This will target the specific audiences’ and my aimed is to create a magazine in the style of the vibe and billboard.

This highlights the convention and use of unique gratification in a form of orginal identity. I want my magazine to contain a sense of personal identification other than just the title, and an element of surveillance. This way it's allows the audience to pick and choose the favourite prefrence of choice and use the website in their own way. Also it should have a sharing option so that the users can share their favourite songs and artsits with a wider group of people, this creates a personal relationship between the users and other people who are not on the website.
And also surveillance, constant updates (which is more handy than print magazines) daily updates on the artists, new songs, trends etc.

Brief Analysis of MTV

1. How does the institution (publisher) make money?

Through Advertisement. A variety of agencies pay the publisher to publish their adverts on high rated/popular webistes. For each view they get on the website, they earn some money especially if they're selling things.

2. Who is the audience and what tells you this?

I think the audience is teenagers and up. I assume this because the content is quite graphic and contain foul language thus it's not suitable for children where as teenagers are usually prone to hearing or even using foul language and seeing graphic images on TV. Even the colors used on the website, it's not very colourful or "fun" for kids.

  3. How you are intended to ‘use’ or ‘interact with the site?

By reading, watching and hearing things on the website. Also the menu buttons can help navigate to whatever page you want. You can listen to music, watch videos, read the latest gossip, look at adverts and share with your friends.

4. How would you apply audience theories to the site?

The more popular, high rated, more appealing it is then more audience will be there. The graphics, photos, videos, music and gossip attracts more people rather than it being a boring page.

5. Identify the effect of ‘value added content’ (e.g. photos, videos, clips) on the target audience?

It makes it more appealing, it adds interest to the webiste. Without it, I don't think it will be as popular or as interesting. It will be boring. The target audience (teens +) usually like watching videos or looking at photos, the majority of them don't enjoy reading especially in boring font. So with the nice clolours, photos, videos, music, gossip, adverts and nice graphics will add more effect.

Vibe the magazine Research

The Vibe magazine first started in 1993 and was founded by Quincy Jones. It had originally been called Volume by co-founder, Scott poulson-Bryant. The magazine was based in New york city in America. The magazine formally was pre-dominatly revolved around certain music genres such as: R&B, Hip hop, Rap etc. The magazine also features actors and the latest gossip of what's happening in the celebrities' lives. Back then, hip hop was always number one on the charts. The magazine mainly was revolved around certain artists such as: Janet Jackson, Tupac, Busta Rhymes and many other artists. Quincy Jones teamed up with Times Inc and was owned by both of them for only three years until it was sold to Miller publishing and then sold again to the Spin magazine. The spin magazine then successfully owned The vibe for several years. The magazine was said to attract "Ebony or Jet readers". By this term, this meant black people due to generalisation of blacks who enjoy hip hop music. Later on, The Vibe became a media surrounded thing. The reputation of the magazine lead to whatever status/league the celebrity/artist may have be classified in. For instance, someone like Michael Jackson was really popular and he's presence on the magazine may have gain more publicity for him and the Vibe. In 2013, The vibe still continues to be a successful magazine, although it was more popular in the early 90's. Their publicty has expanded through media. Usually it only featured people of black race, now it features all types of popular artists, even ones who are not in the R&B/hip hop/rap genre e.g. Kesha, Justin Bieber etc. Recently, female singer Kesha made history with her appearance on the cover of Vibe. The is the first solo white singer to be featured on Vibe. She proved to millions that her music isn't just "guilty pop". Kesha is striving to become a well-known successful singer. The Vibe is also gaining publicity over the drastic change in comparison to the past last years.
